Paper For Trees

Paper4trees and how it works
Paper4trees, an environmental education programme run by EERST, encourages schools and preschools to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill. Paper4trees provides schools and preschools with the resources they need to set up an easy-to-use, in house paper and cardboard recycling system. In turn EERST rewards the schools and preschools with native trees, shrubs, grasses and flaxes.

EERST believes positive messages and incentives helps to change behaviour. Paper4trees is often seen as a tree planting programme but it is actually a waste minimisation programme – the trees, recycling bins and other resources are just the “carrot and thank you”!

EERST is not a recycling operator and does not collect any paper or cardboard. Schools and preschools organise a recycling collection e.g. kerbside, transport to a recycling centre or organise for a commercial recycling contractor to collect. EERST can help schools and preschools with recycling information in their local area.

How it works:
  • Schools and preschools join Paper4trees by completing a joining form, either from this website or through an EERST representative.
  • Schools and preschools organise their own paper and cardboard collection.
  • EERST supplies schools and preschools with 30 litre green plastic recycling bins for every room in the school (e.g. classrooms, offices, printer rooms, libraries and anywhere else waste paper and cardboard may be generated).
  • EERST provides resources. These include;
    • recycling posters (for the green bins)
    • a laminated recording sheet (so schools and preschools can keep a record of how much paper and cardboard is recycled throughout the year)
    • a certificate (that schools and preschools can proudly display in their office). (click here to go to the Paper4trees Resources page to see other resources available for schools and preschools, including badges and classroom posters).
  • EERST emails an e-newsletter to all schools and preschools that have joined Paper4trees each term, with updates and competitions.
  • EERST rewards schools and preschools with one native plant for every two cubic metres of paper and cardboard they recycle. This is the equivalent to around 60 EERST green bins, eight large wheelie bins, three woolsacks or one 2 cubic metre cardboard cage.
  • EERST sends all schools and preschools that have joined Paper4trees a native tree order form in December every year so we can order and deliver plants in the following year.
  • Schools and preschools refer to their recording sheet to see how much paper and cardboard they have recycled from either the start of the year (or from when they joined to the end of the year). This will indicate how many trees they have earned in return for recycling efforts. Schools can also call EERST on 0800 727 4873 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting FREE 0800 727 4873 end_of_the_skype_highlighting and ask for help in working out how many trees earned. It’s easy and fast.
  • EERST collates all orders and communicates with local nurseries. In the North Island, trees are delivered between May and June. In the South Island, trees are delivered between September and October. Please note delivery may be postponed due to weather or lack of sponsorship in certain areas.
  • Schools and preschools plant the trees in their school grounds, within the community or donate them to a local planting projects.
The Paper4trees programme is sponsored by national sponsors, local businesses, corporate sponsors and local government. For a list of our sponsors please click here
